The Growth of Prepaid, The Decline of Cash

A world without
Cash
Cash (Photo: BlatantWorld.com)
cash is something that is hard to imagine, perhaps, we won’t see it in our lifetime. Granted, it may well happen but not in the next few years. However, there is already an evolution going on in regards of how consumers to pay for items. Credit cards and debit cards are the go-to options when paying for transactions in stores, restaurants, and even in the subway. Some may have even gone so far as to not carry cash around at all anymore. All they have is something that’s plastic in their back pocket. Chicago resident Louise Collis has taken this to heart, leaving behind cash and only using her cards. But she is not alone.

There are times where you may find yourself going weeks, months, maybe even a year without even using cash. The usage of cards, now, is based upon the economy. Cash is still in high use because of the current recession from which we are recovering. But as the economy improves, the usage of credit cards will also increase. There are stores now that only accept cards or gift cards. After consumer complaints, commerce has listened. Many stores, offer consumers the opportunity to buy gift cards with cash and then use the gift cards to purchase items in-store or elsewhere. Consumers get the best of both worlds, this way - no bank account or credit needed.

The exchange of debit, and credit cards for cash currency happens all the time between people in more affluent societies.  But there are many stores that are not rushing at the chance to cater solely to them. WalMart is giving customers the opportunity to pay for items online with cash.

It's not just stores either. From Japan to the United States to Mexico, people are using paper currency less. Whether it's transit or payroll, tax returns or remittances, many more people are using pre-loaded cards or apps for transactions without cash money ever coming into play.

Though I believe this country is far from removing cash all together, Sweden has become a cashless society where churches, yes, churches, accept your cards now instead of paper money. Could the U.S. possibly live in a society like that? Absolutely, but to believe that this will happen a year, ten or twenty years down the line, may be a bit of a stretch. It is an interesting notion to think about and that will be explored further.

Welcome to the 25 prepaid facts blog series

English: 'I'm Lovin It' — HM1(FMF) Fred Turner...
I'm Lovin It' — HM1(FMF) Fred Turner swipes his gift card in McDonald's new card machine, April 4. The new machine now allows customers to use debit, credit or gift cards to purchase food. (Photo: Wikipedia)
For the next several weeks, there will be a series of informative blog posts on the fascinating but evolving world of prepaid cards. Each post written will be an extension of a previous blog post: The “25 intriguing thingsyou should know about prepaid cards” post offered insightful information pertaining to the growing usage of prepaid cards. In the post, the facts included the abundance amount of money being filled on the prepaid cards, the high volume usage between the different incomes and the new way to pay for items.

With this new series, I will be able to go a little deeper into those fun facts and  offer some insights. The topics will be filled with variety with the hope that they will cause you to think about our changing world. The posts will make you wonder what it would be like if cash was virtually nonexistent (like the penny). Others will make you think how it would to interact with one another only using your debt or credit card. By interaction, I mean the idea of owing someone money and cash is not available, you may use your card. And imagine that only your phone would be used when purchasing items. These are just a few teasers for what is to come.

Prepaid is an ever expanding industry and the ideas mentioned before could be very possible for in the next few years to come. Granted, the extinction of cash is highly unlikely to happen in our lifetime (or is it?), however, stores using only gift cards and meters allowing people to use their cards instead of putting coins are already a reality. Most people now only carry their cards; they simply do not carry cash on them, they rather just use their card. Soon we all will wake up one day and things that seem so abstract to most people will become reality.

And, this is what the series will be about. So over the next few weeks I invite you, the reader, to be intrigued by the posts provided and imagine the way the world will be changing and the way the prepaid cards space is converging with other industries..

Prepaid Expo 2012 Winner Video: The Israel Postal Bank Payoneer Card

The winner of the 2012 Prepaid Expo's best "Paybefore" card to use for traveling or remitting payments was the Israel Postal Bank Payoneer Card, developed byYuval Tal in conjunction with the Israel Postal Authority. In the video below, Yuval Tal  shares more about this innovative prepaid product.

The prepaid card can be loaded with money from the Israel post office before traveling. When abroad, the funds can be obtained through a local ATM machine in the foreign currency of that country, eliminating the need for carrying large sums of cash or traveler's checks that can be lost or stolen. The card has also become a reliable and safe way of paying for online purchases, because there is no need to give out private details over the Internet.

Wrapp App Offers Social Gift Cards Platform - Debuts at Gap, Sephora...

Those of you who joined us in London at the 2012 The Gift Card, Gift Voucher and Reloadable Card Summit, will recall Wrapp, a Sweden-based mobile gift card and retail service, backed by Greylock Partners and Atomico, driving innovation in the estimated $100 Billion industry.

The app has launched across the pond and was unveiled at U.S. retailers including Fab.com, Gap, H&M, Sephora, Brooklyn Industries, The Wall Street Journal, Wayfair, and others, yesterday.

The service, billing itself as the anti-Groupon, offers a way to drive customers and activate higher sales in-stores by allowing users to give and share $5-$15 gift cards to friends (the app utilizes the Facebook social graph), which recipients can redeem in store. Some of the cards are available for free and once posted to a friend's wall, others can also add money to the card. "Participating merchants report that each sale averages four to six times the value of the free gift card they let Wrapp users give to their friends."

"Wrapp launched in Sweden in November, and more recently opened its service in the U.K. and Norway. Since then, it has amassed about 165,000 active users that have gifted more than 1.4 million cards."

The debut is receiving a lot buzz because the service sits on the very intersection of the savvy consumer trend of using smartphones to save money in brick and mortar stores, with the collective discount phenomena of services like Groupon, to help retailers bring in in-store shoppers through the influence of their friends and family and because of the synthesis with Facebook's social graph, it can also be leveraged to target certain social and demographics shopper segments as well as gather insights on the market and campaigns.

It will be interesting to see how Wrapp transforms the Gift Card space and its traction, especially during peak holiday shopping season.

On New Jersey Prepaid Card Consumers & Access

A few weeks ago American Express removed their prepaid cards from shelves throughout the entire state of New Jersey (the cards can only be purchased online). The reason? The state’s recently amended unclaimed property law. The new law proposes a new tracking system to record where the cards were purchased, and after two years of inactivity the state will gain access to the remaining balance.

What does this mean for prepaid cards in the state of New Jersey?

These companies are protecting their consumers' privacy and also declaring that the state has no right to claim an available balance on an unexpired card.

How will people respond to the privacy issue?

It will be interesting to see in the coming months, how the state is effected by the removal of their prepaid cards.

Global Prepaid Exchange, a company based in the U.K., reported a social media campaign, ‘Gift Card Users Unite’ started on facebook. The goal of the campaign is to inform New Jersey citizens of the controversy and push for a more consumer and business friendly solution to the issue.

What are your thoughts on the issue and the campaign?

* Updated to note the Gift Card Users Unite movement was launched by "a group of citizens and business owners concerned about New Jersey's new unclaimed property law and its impact on gift cards" as per their site and U.K.-based Global Prepaid Exchange reported the movement.

Live from Prepaid Expo: The Future of Prepaid & Mobile

We wrapped up our last day at Prepaid Expo 2012 by looking ahead at Prepaid in the Future: The Consumers, Products, and Technology in 5, 10, 15 Years, and Mobile - how to do it, Uncovering Mobile Payment Opportunities in Developed and Developing Markets, and the Mobile Wallet and NFC at the Point of Sale: How It Has Been Introduced and Where It Is Heading.

There will be a huge opportunity to do more in Prepaid in the future.

Prepaid sits at the vanguard of mobile and has had a big role in innovation in the past. There's a lot of room to grow, mobile will be the forefront of innovation. We've just started to scratch the surface - from cash to electronic vehicles for payments. $2.3 trillion still done in cash. Prepaid sits at the center of all of the new mobile applications being developed.

Prepaid has been shouldering its way in terms of other payment forms. There are still a lot problems to be solved, especially in terms of Prepaid. It's still in it's infancy.

There will be a movement toward moving financial literacy and education toward mobile platforms, SMS, social media, etc., Being as inclusive as possible, allowing consumers to experience the brand as a whole.

The global current trends are certainly in this industry's favor, it seems.

The barriers to Prepaid: Do consumers get what we are, what we do, how we can help them? Along with the baggage, the image/reputation. Social media will be a key media to do deliver these messages. The threat to prepaid growth: execution. How can we deliver value and use prepaid to solve real world problems?

Analytics and data insights will be key to understanding our consumers and identifying how to help them and what their needs are - to increase the value of Prepaid in their lives and deliver on this. Our products will have to better and smarter, mobile allows a lot to be done from this framework.

A cashless society will eliminate many of the pain points consumers are currently experiencing. Prepaid cards will have more rewards in the future. In mature markets, we have to accelerate the opportunity. In emerging markets, it's about enabling.

So how exactly can the Prepaid space leverage mobile?

Incorporate mobile into every touch point, have different options/device options, mediums, along with specific user experience for each environment. There are many opportunities for each. For example, 62% of holiday shoppers started on one device, moved to another to complete purchase.

We also need to develop standards for the industry. Albeit no one can control it, except for the consumer.
Although 55 ways of doing something - one way is easier and leads to mainstream adoption. We need to focus on infrastructure too: Privacy..., will lead to innovation. Push to cloud makes it much easier to manage infrastructure

Think about user experience and how to make to make it fun for the user. From a solution/design enhancement angle, mobile will become more nimble and cloud-based. A successful app will start from scratch, with a dedicated focus but who build by consensus. NFC payments are the future, but we need to address the needs of the consumer too. Right now, we are that HD/Blu-ray/DVD phase except with 18 formats?

Things to consider:
What will be frictionless in your environment?
What will bring the greatest value?
What will be the best authentication?
What's the best way to reduce cost?
How do you make prepaid product more relevant and valuable to cardholder before, during, after the payment transaction?

The future: Expect lots of transformation in the next 5 years. "We always overestimate the change that will occur in the next two years and underestimate the change that will occur in the next ten."--Bill Gates

We can't call the winners, but we can call the huge opportunities that lay ahead.

Mobile Payment Opportunities in Developed and Developing Markets?

India, china and Africa have virtually no infrastructure for cashless payments but everyone has a cellphone. A revolution will happen in these markets in the next 5 years.

Give consumers super-easy apps to get them used to payment apps in the future. Imagine mobile/digital goods or services that can also be utilized in a brick and mortar store.

Mobile Payments: 2012 & Beyond:

There's been too much association between NFC and wallets.

User behavior online is directly connected to user behavior offline, in-store.

Wallets will live on the cloud and be accessible from your desktop and connected to your networked profiles. There is still a need to create a seamless, integrated experience between offline and online. At the end of the day, consumers will adopt the most ubiquitous, easiest, intuitive wallet available.

Live from Prepaid Expo 2012: Emerging Payment Systems

We wrapped up the Regulation Summit today with a presentation on Emerging Payment Systems: Legal, Regulatory and Compliance Considerations from Kara Kuchar, Special Counsel, SCHULTE, ROTH & ZABEL LLP, and Tomas Campos, General Manager of Online and Mobile, BLACKHAWK NETWORK.

Innovation has led to new economic models and regulations and considerations:

Who "owns" the mobile wallet customer? Who "owns" the data in this new ecosystem?

Regulation is going to have to keep up. As new challenges come up, new opportunities will arise for people to step up and provide solutions and new services.

Emerging Mobile Payments Trend examples changing the space:
Mobile wallets: Paypal, Google, Isis
Mobile as POS: Square, Verifone, Intuit GoPayment
P2P transfers: QuikPay, Pingit
Direct Carrier Billing: Boku, Zong, PaymentOne

There will be a need to develop and implement policies to cover security and fraud risks for these new services and consider state and federal laws.

As well as a consideration for these issues within contracts with partners, allocating liability.

Lastly, Regulatory framework covering both Regulation E and Regulation Z.

Russo is a Senior Social Media Strategist at IIR USA with a technology, anthropology, marketing and publishing business acumen.  She will be attending Prepaid Expo USA 2012 and covering the event live via Twitter and the Prepaid Expo Blog.
