Omnichannel - The Key to Retail Success

At present retailers are increasingly looking into implementing omnichannel retail strategies in order to create a better experience for their customers. These strategies help not only with sales revenue but they let the customer do whatever they need to do throughout their shopping experience no matter what device or platform they are on. This creates an easier and more efficient way for the customer to shop.

An omnichannel strategy that is becoming more popular with retail decision makers is the advancement in mobile capabilities. Retailers are increasingly looking into ways that they can interact with their customers through online platforms which can be accessed through smart phones or tablets. Some online sites include a feature that lets the shopper interact with a stylist to help choose products dependent on the customers likes and dislikes. This kind of service can normally only be found in a physical store. For example Nordstrom acquired Trunk Club, the personalized clothing service which meant shoppers had clothes hand selected by stylists and sent straight to their door with no shipping costs. A service like that in a world where working hours are getting longer and customers are increasingly looking online to shop means that a better online relationship with customers can yield higher revenue sales. Nordstrom experienced a 6.2% increase in sales after their acquisition of the Trunk Club. By creating an omnichannel retail experience, shoppers can still have the same experience they might expect in store whilst on the move on a tablet, laptop or smartphone.

In store, mobile advancements are creating more efficient shopping experiences for customers. Store associates are often equipped with iPads or other tablets and can walk the isles and interact with customers. This gives them the ability to look up stock numbers on the spot, order in from other stores to cater for the customer’s exact needs or in some cases pay for the products then and there. This makes the shopping experience a more fluid and efficient process.

A recent app powered by Pick’n’Tell for Alfred Angelo bridal company has recording mirrors in store which allows brides to record or take pictures of themselves in the dresses they like. These images or videos then are immediately sent to the consumer’s smartphone which allows the shopper to be able to take the time at home to review the best option and can then buy it easily online. The app can also be used to choose dresses online which will be ready for them on arrival at the store. This creates a seamless customer experience across the digital and physical shopping world.

This ability to create an easier and more personalized shopping experience is increasingly becoming the key in retail strategies. By using omnichannels, companies are able to give the customer a more unique and efficient retail experience which will keep them coming back and thus increasing sales revenue.

Line is Set to Enter the Mobile Payments Space with Line Pay

Line, a free messaging app, announced plans for a mobile payments service way back in October. Today, Line has 170 million monthly users and their new payments service has been branded "Line Pay" and will be released around the world very soon.

The significance of the Line Pay launch is not just surrounding the welcoming of a new competitor, Line is attempting to make their app become a complete "lifestyle platform". It will be interesting to see the adoption rate of Line Pay and whether or not it can become the all-in-one platform Line is hoping for.

As of now, Line Pay allows users to complete transactions through the app at affiliated online and brick-and-mortar stores once you have registered your credit cards. However, on the horizon there is a P2P update that will allow users to send money to other users.

At a time when messaging apps are slowing in growth, Line's entrance into the mobile payments space seems very timely.

Where do you see the future of mobile payments heading? Is Line's attempt to create a complete platform for users to seamlessly handle both conversations and payments the future? Join us in Las Vegas, February 23-25 for All Payments Expo 2015 to learn and explore the ever changing landscape of the payments space.

5 Reasons to Partner at All Payments Expo

All Payments Expo is less than 3 weeks away, and attendees and speakers are already starting to cement their partnering plans for the event.

Here are 5 Reasons Why You Can't Miss The Partnering Opportunities at All Payments Expo:

1) Market Size: All Payments Expo is home to 1,500+ players looking for partners, including card networks, processors, issuers/acquirers, retail banks, start-ups, new technologies and 300+ merchants. Register now and start messaging them immediately to book onsite meetings.

2) Interoperability: The future of payments relies on an interoperable infrastructure, which can only be achieved by leveraging partnerships with numerous stakeholders, including incumbents and newcomers fresh out of beta testing.

3) Investment Potential: Venture capitalists, banks and major corporations are all on the hunt for the next investment or acquisition. The potential licensing agreements, investments and acquisitions are why so many investors, banks and start-ups attend All Payments Expo.

4) More Merchants: Retailers will continue to play a hugely important role in emerging payments acceptance. Without a frictionless consumer experience and a strategic loyalty play, many new payments types won't find merchant acceptance -- or get off the ground. This is the only payments event with 300+ merchants in attendance.

5) The Future of FinTech: New non-bank companies are reinventing the ways consumers borrow, buy and bank. These newcomers often compete with hefty industry mainstays and grapple with uncertain regulations. With more than two days devoted to FinTech content, you'll meet new companies looking for scale and established firms looking to innovate quickly.

Mobile Payment Adoption

Mobile payment adoption has become a pressing matter in the retail industry with everyone looking to successfully integrate new technology with the payment systems already in place. KFC is the latest retailer to make a splash with its AIRTAG partnership announcement to launch the chain’s first ever mobile and web app designed for ordering and paying, titled “KFC Fast Track”. This seamless ordering experience includes; geolocation, mobile and web ordering/payment capabilities, a mobile check in feature for in-store order recall. Plus, customer accounts so users can store details for one click payments.

IT Director of KFC UK & Ireland, Paul Borrett said, “Our customers lead increasingly busy lives and KFC Fast Track is focused on helping them order, pay for and collect their food faster than ever before.”

The same themes continue driving today’s innovation – accessibility and simplicity,  Many key players in the retail industry are testing products similar to KFC’s, such as Starbucks with their Square Wallet. As mobile payment solutions are becoming increasingly popular, who will win the race to mobile payment supremacy?

In just one week, hundreds of prepaid and payments leaders in Europe will converge to discuss the latest innovations that are posing the biggest opportunities for banks, merchants, mobile players and programme managers. If you want to capitalize on the evolving landscape, this is where you’ll find new partners, sharpen your strategy and dive into thought-provoking discussions on how the payments landscape continues to evolve across Europe.

Predictions on Apple as the Wallet War Continues to Pick up Steam

Industry insiders scrutinize Apple’s every movement: Most recently up for debate was Apple’s wallet debut with Passbook, as well as the revelation that the iPhone 5 would not support NFC.

Apple plays its cards pretty close to the chest, but one industry analyst predicts that the company is revving up for the mobile payments race in a big, big way.

According to Investors.com, Dan Perlin, a RBC Capital analyst, predicts that Apple is likely to launch a closed-loop loyalty program dubbed iPoints. Perlin thinks Apple will be able to leverage the 400 million card accounts already on file with iTunes to build a payments and loyalty program.

NFC

“This could give Apple an edge over other emerging mobile payment systems such as Google, Square, and eBay’s PayPal unit,” Perlin told Investors.com.

Apple’s acquisition of AuthenTec in April 2012 suggests that the next generation iPhone, the 5S (set to be released in June) will be equipped with NFC – only adding to the buzz. For more on this story and full article from investor.com click here

Do you think Apple is planning a major entry into the payments space this year? Is this Apple’s attempt to try the same closed-loop, loyalty-based system Starbucks has created?

At Prepaid Expo this March, there will be plenty of time to debate these new movements in the mobile payments war, including insights from Patrick Gauthier, Head of Product Strategy & Business Operations, Retail Services at PayPal and an on-stage debate on the future of the payments ecosystem with American Express, Green Dot, MasterCard and InComm.

Finance, Payments & Prepaid on Pinterest: What I found

I've become a fan of Pinterest, the latest social network phenomenon, after writing about its corporate innovation potential here. One of the trends that I am always exploring is how social media can be harnessed by the finance industry, both externally for marketing and consumer education/awareness and externally to learn how consumers feel, think or use products and gather insights.

Why Pinterest Makes Cents Sense

As an avid user (and also a analyst/marketer) one of my favorite finds on Pinterest are infographics - lot of data condensed into an aesthetically pleasing one-pager - and Pinterest has them aplenty. Originally, this post was going to be about Pinners Prepaid Should Follow on Pinterest but after a deep dive, I think it might be best to show you the goodies I found on Pinterest and then explain why they matter:

Evolving Technology and Disruptive Innovation

Adapt or Die. Whenever I talk to clients about social media, I often refer to this principle but it has implications beyond marketing. The pace of technology innovations today is happening at unparalleled speed and affecting every single sector and will transform it. This is our new market reality. The marketplace is changing, and so are the needs of the Prepaid consumer.

Pinterest along with other popular social networks are often underrated by the finance industry or seen as the play things of the idle with little ROI. I see a lot of potential uses for them as tools for which to analyze and research trends, consumer data and the shifting landscape, its players, and filter news. I hope you try it out and enjoy it as much as I do.

The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.”

Cashless Squares Up At Starbucks

(Photo: BetaNews.com)
A typical encounter at the cash register consists of either fumbling with cash and change, or pulling out your credit card, swipe it, wait for an authorization, followed by a signing of a console or receipt. An alternative payment method has been emerging in small, and micro, businesses.

These alternative payment methods will be more apparent in coming months as a big deal has been struck by caffeine distribution giant, Starbucks, and mobile payment startup, Square.

In early August, Starbucks has struck a deal and will be investing $25 million to outfit a network of 7000 participating stores with the mobile payment system, Square. Howard Schultz, CEO of Starbucks, notes that, “the smartphone is the primary device in our lives.” This deal will provide Starbucks with a significant discount on credit card processing fees. Traditional credit card processing methods required businesses to pay the credit card company 2.5-5% plus equipment rental and usage charges. Square on the other hand charges a flat 2.75% with free equipment, in the form of a dongle that attaches via headphone jack on any smartphone or tablet.

In 2009, Jack Dorsey, founder of Twitter, took a leap in to innovating the mobile payment space. With a simple philosophy, “everyone should be able to accept credit cards. It should be easy and free to get set up, it should use simple technology people already own, and, most importantly, it should instantly adapt to any size business”.

Square consists of four major components: a card reader, Pay With Square app, Square Register, and a Square Card Reader. The card reader is a plastic device which plugs into the audio jack of an iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad and Android based mobile phones. This allows any smartphone to be used as a credit card swiping machine. Pay With Square is an app which allows customers check in a Square enabled business and set up tabs and pay with their names. It also enables them to receive electronic receipts. The Square Register is available for the iPad and transforms it into a credit card management system. Square Card Reader is another app available free of cost for iOS and Android, and is the actual interface that is utilized by the business to manage payments made via the card reader or Pay With Square app.

Previously focused around aiding small and micro businesses, with this $25 million investment from Starbucks, Square has raked in $200 million in new funding, positioning Square with a $3.25 billion valuation. As of March, Square has processed $4 billion a year in mobile payments transactions in this year alone through its 1 million registered merchants.

With well-established companies, such as PayPal, Google Wallet, Intuit, LevelUp, and dozens others, fighting to gain market share in the space of mobile payments, the addition to the 7000 stores that have been added through the Starbucks deal, Square has taken a huge lead ahead of their growing field of competition.

The exposure provided through Starbucks to spotlight an seamless alternative payment method will greatly expand the emerging cashless zeitgeist. Expect to see more alternative payment methods at an ever growing number businesses, from your corner store to one of the thousands of Starbucks coffee shops.
